About Environmental Factors

Easy ~40 min study

Environmental Factors is the first chapter of Unit 7, Business Environment, in the Tamil Nadu State Board Class 12 Commerce book. It begins with Bayard O Wheeler's definition of business environment and shows why scanning the environment, through a SWOT analysis, is essential before any strategic decision.

The lesson then sorts the environment into internal factors such as value system, vision and human resources, and external factors. The external environment is split into the micro or task environment and the macro or general environment, with economic, socio-cultural, political and legal, geo-physical, technological and global factors. The last sections deal with VUCA, corporate governance and GST.

This page gathers the five book-back one mark questions, with answers checked against the book's key and the lesson, plus additional questions on every section, each with a short explanation.

Environmental Factors explained

What this lesson covers

Meaning and significance

Business environment is the sum total of all internal and external factors that affect a business. Understanding it helps in formulating strategy, identifying opportunities, scanning threats, coping with change and building a public image.

Internal environment

Factors within the organisation that can be changed, so they are controllable: value system, vision and objectives, management structure, internal power relations, human resources, company image and other factors like R&D and capital structure.

External environment

  • Micro (task): financiers, suppliers, marketing channel members, public, customers and competitors.
  • Macro (general): economic, socio-cultural, political and legal, geo-physical, technological and global environment. These are uncontrollable.

VUCA, corporate governance and GST

VUCA stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, a term developed by the U.S. military in the late 80's. Corporate governance is a set of rules and policies that governs a company; India's norms came from the Kumara Mangalam Birla, Narayana Murthy, Adi Godrej and Uday Kotak committees. GST is an indirect tax with three parts: CGST, SGST and IGST, and the GST Council is chaired by the Union Finance Minister.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling the macro environment controllable. Macro factors are uncontrollable; only internal factors are controllable.
  • Placing competitors or customers in the internal environment. They are micro environment factors.
  • Swapping the other names: micro is the task environment, macro is the general environment.
  • Thinking IGST is collected by the State Government. IGST is collected by the Central Government on inter-state sales.
  • Putting natural harbours under the technological environment. They are a geo-physical factor.
